Renovating a yard can be a real labor of love, especially if you're doing it for a family member. Twenty year old shrubs are likely to have extensive root systems which you'll want to completely remove or you'll have volunteer shrubs sprouting from whatever root system is left in the ground. You can hand dig the roots or rent a bobcat or similar machine from an equipment rental place. Once you have the land cleared you can choose and plant your new plants.
