|I am going to take out my mother-in-laws front yard in the Spring. She has an entire front yard of over grown shrubs. They are 20 years old or more.
what literature is the best ones to read to get a good start on this project?

Twenty year old shrubs are likely to have extensive root systems which you'll want to completely remove or you'll have volunteer shrubs sprouting from whatever root system is left in the ground. You can hand dig the roots or rent a bobcat or similar machine from an equipment rental place. Once you have the land cleared you can choose and plant your new plants. Good luck with your project!
