Clay soil should be amended with organic matter prior to planting seeds or laying sod. You can add compost, well rotted manure or sphagnum peat to loosen your clay soil and increase the porosity. For heavy clay soils, use about 3 cubic yards of peat or other organic matter for every 1,000 square feet of surface area in your yard. Rototill it in well, then level and plant your lawn. Good luck with your project!
