Flowering Japanese umbrella tree, bark is starting to peel, what can i put on it.

Poor tree! The symptom you describe could be caused by a number of things, including bacteria, frost or winter sunscald. My recommendation is for you to have someone local assess the problem to see if there is any way to save the tree. Call your local extension service for their help or for a referral (Cooperative Extension (Passaic County), 1310 Route 23 North, Wayne, NJ 07470-5825 phone (973) 305-5742.
