Plants use fertilizer when they are actively growing so wait until your maple begins to leaf out in the spring before feeding. Since your maple is in a container, feed carefully so you don't accidentally burn the roots. Use a half strength dilution of liquid fertilizer such as Miracle Gro or Peter's to feed your potted plants and they will be happy. Enjoy your garden!
