Here are a few suggestions for the shady site you describe: Buxus microphylla (Japanese Boxwood). It's roundish and compact, growing about 3-4 feet tall and wide.
Or, Ilex cornuta 'Rotunda' (dwarf Chinese holly). It is evergreen and grows 3-4' tall and wide. A final suggestion is Chinese Loropetalum. It's a compact shrub with about a 6' height. Hope one of these is just right for your landscape.
