is there any good use for fireplace ash /

You can safely add about a cup of ashes to a 4 by 4 foot compost pile without harm. If you have more than that you might want to sprinkle them over your garden bed and dig them into the soil. You can safely add about 10 pounds per 1000 square feet of garden. More than that can upset the soil's pH.
