how deep is the hole dug for a standard orange tree, twice as deep as the container, or just as deep as the container?

You'll want the tree to be at the same soil level as it was in the nursery pot so dig a hole slightly wider but exactly the same depth as the nursery pot. Unpot your new tree, set it in the hole, and fill all around the sides with the soil you took out of the hole. Water it well to help settle the soil. Best wishes with your new tree.
