There are a number of different varieties of sunflowers and it might be that you have one of the smaller kinds. If you want truly large sunflowers, choose 'Mammoth' or seeds for other giant flowering sunflowers. Since these plants thrive in heat and grow tallest during the summer, you may have planted yours too early (or too late) in the season if it is just now flowering. Try planting in March so your sunflower can grow all summer long. I think you'll have better results next time.
