You absolutely can inter-mix your vegetables and your flowers. In fact, the bees the flowers attract will benefit your vegetable plants by ensuring the flowers are pollinated and your veggies set lots of fruits. You can begin planting some vegetables in January and February, some can go into the ground in June and you can plant again in the fall. Here's a planting schedule from Georgia Cooperative Extension to help you know which veggies to plant when: http://www.walterreeves.com/up...

Best wishes with your new garden!
