What kind of fertilizer do I use for my potted Japanese Maple? Do I wait to fertilize until I see leaves sprouting?

Since your plant is in a container it will be susceptible to fertilizer burn unless you're careful. You can use a time release such as Osmocote or you can feed with a half strength dilution of liquid fertilizer such as Miracle Gro. It's better to underfeed than to overfeed so apply carefully. Wait until you see new growth before feeding. When your maple is actively growing it will be looking for nutrients and will use them efficiently. Enjoy your maple!
