| Red twigged dogwoods (Cornus sericea) tend to sucker and spread by underground roots, so it may be a bit difficult to move one but it is certainly possible. (Another form of red twigged dogwood is Cornus sanguinea; this one has fibrous root system and transplants well although I wouldn't call it easy.) Very early spring would be a good time to try this. Cut the shrub back to about a foot high, then dig it up, taking as much of the wide-spreading root system as you can. You will probably need help to do this as plants are extremely heavy -- you may wish to slide it onto a tarp and then drag it to the new location. Transplant it and water it in very well. Be sure to keep it very well watered (an inch or two a week) for the rest of the season. |
