|Butterfly bushes are vigorous growers and benefit from annual pruning. If yours freezes down to ground level each winter you can safely prune everything down to ground level. If yours remains evergreen, you can either prune it down to ground level or you can reduce the height and width by any amount to help keep it under control. Butterfly bushes develop flowers on the new growth of the season so pruning in the late winter or early spring will ensure you have lots of new growth, and lots of flowers in the summertime.
