We planted a young crepe myrtle in July of 10. We recently heard that we should be pruning it before the spring growth. We are in Tampa, FL. True? If so, when and how much do we prune back? Thx.

Crepe myrtles do not require pruning but since they develop flowers on the new growth of the season, a light (3-5 inch) pruning all over will promote new growth and lots of flowers. Pruning yours back in early spring, just as new growth begins, should result in lots of new, flowering wood. You can prune it back again after it has finished blooming and it will grow and bloom again later in the season.
