|I planted vegetable seedlings, which sprouted nicely. However, they're growing long & spindly, and the true leaves haven't sprouted yet. I guess they don't get enough sunlight (we're not home during the day to move them around according to where the sun is). Question: will a grow light help; if so, do you know of retail outlets in the New York City/Long Island/New Jersey area that sell the Burpee grow light set & stand?
|It is very difficult to provide seedlings enough light unless you are lucky enough to have a very bright room with a big south facing window. It's critical to move the plants into good light as soon as they germinate or they will become leggy and unhealthy in a hurry. Many gardeners use special grow lights, others use ordinary florescent tubes (one "warm" and one "cool" type) in "shop light" fixtures. The plants need to be kept within just a few inches of the bulbs. You might wish to contact Burpee direct with regard to the retail availability of the light stand, the toll free customer service number is 1-800-333-5808 -- if not, perhaps they could ship you one on an expedited basis. Good luck with your seedlings!
