I have a 200 foot side pole/horse fence that I need to plant a windbreak because of the strong drying south winds. I need something other than poplar trees to break the wind in my high desert zone 3/4 back yard? Also what kind of bush/vine with lots of fragrance will grow up my fence?

The Nevada Foresty Dept. recommends the following evergreens for windbreaks: Arizona Cypress, Austrian Pine, and Lodgepole Pine. For even more protection, consider planting a second row along your first, using lower growing dense evergreen shrubs such as Juniper. The combination will provide the most protection.

As for fragrant vines, you might try growing Carolina Jessamine, Star Jasmine or honeysuckle over your fence.

Best wishes with your new plants!
