Turfgrass really requires sunshine in order to grow well so any turf you plant in a shady area will need to be reseeded or resodded every few years. Tall fescue sod is moderately drought and shade tolerant and performs well throughout Illinios. It is adapted to a wide range of soil conditions so it might be the best variety for your landscape. Or, you may want to consider planting and evergreen groundcover instead. If you do plant grass seeds, late April to mid-May is the optimal time. Best wishes with your lawn.
