I live in IN. When is it best to prune flowering shrubs and roses. Should I prune azaleas, flowering plums or is it best to leave them alone?

The best times to prune flowering shrubs is immediately after they have finished flowering. Roses are an exception. They should be pruned in early spring just as leaf buds begin to swell on the stems. Plum trees can be pruned to keep them in shape but it isn't necessary to prune them. Hope this clarifies things for you.
