With any luck at all your dog will outgrow the digging phase or you can train him/her to stop digging. As for the shade, I'm afraid turfgrass isn't very happy in the shade but if you're willing to overseed/reseed every 2-3 years you can grow fescue type turfgrass. It's the most shade tolerant of all grasses. You can prepare the soil for seeding by rototilling it up, raking out the debris, leveling the area and then seeding with fescue grass seed. Keep the area moist and the seeds will sprout in 7-10 days. Best wishes with your lawn.
