Arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) cultivars vary in size and shape so your choice will depend upon the amount of room you can give your new screening hedge. Those most suitable for screening include 'Nigra', which is pyramidal with dark green foliage. It grows 20-30 feet high and about five feet wide. 'Pyramidalis' has a pyramidal shape and bright green foliage. It typically grows 15-20 feet high and remains about three feet wide (great for narrow places). 'Techny' grows to a mature height of fifteen to twenty feet and a mature spread of four to six feet. It is dark green and pyramidal in growth habit. It's one of the fastest growing arborvitaes and had very dense foliage - good as a wind break or noise barrier. Finally, Thuja 'Green Giant' is a fast growing, rather large plant, reaching 40-50 feet tall with a width of 10-15'. I hope these descriptions will help you choose just the right plants for your screening hedge. Good luck with your project!
