Early Tulips - Knowledgebase Question

Elmhurst, IL
Question by SMORTON1

I live near Chicago, Il and had such a mild winter that my tulips stareted sprouting in mid Frebruary! Unfortunately we had an early March snow storm and some cold temperatures. Should I do anything to protect my early tulips or will they be okay on their own?

They should be alright on their own; tulips are very cold tolerant and snow is a good insulator. Even without snow cover, they are usually fine unless the buds are actually opening and the temperatures drop way down near 20 degrees or so. The foliage may show some damage, but that's not too worrisome. In any case, there isn't a whole lot we can do about the weather!
