| I started my impatiens seeds purchased from Burpee in vermiculite as suggested by the Burpee Seed Starter book. They have now germinated and I have removed the dome. Do I leave them in the vermiculite until time to plant outside? If so, do I fertilize with something? If not, if and when do I transplant them and into what? Soil? A soilless mix? This is my first time at starting impatiens. |
| Congratulations on your seedlings! Now that you have removed the dome, make sure your plants are getting as much light as possible. Seedlings are not terribly demanding in terms of fertilizer. You might use a very dilute liquid soluble fertilizer such as MiracleGro on the seedlings after they have formed true leaves. Some gardeners will transplant their seedlings into a potting mixture after germinating them in vermiculite, also after they have formed true leaves. The main goal of that transplanting is to be sure the plants are spaced far enough apart so that they can have ample air circulation, light and nutrients. An alternative would be to thin them, using a nail scissors for example, to cut off excess plants at the base. Good luck with your impatiens! |
