Juglone is the chemical that inhibits the growth of many plants growing near walnut trees. It's in all the tissues of the tree, including roots, bark, leaves, stems and fruit. Some plants are more tolerant to juglone than others. Crabapple, Hawthorn and Redbud are tolerant, but Dogwood and Goldenrain are sensitive to the properties of juglone.
