|Are their a web site or a book that you can suggest for growing sunflowers? I have found little or no information on my own. I am looking for details. Thank you for your help!!|
|Sunflowers don't need much care to grow like crazy. They just need full sun, soil and moisture to perform. As long as the soil supports the growth of grass or other plants, sunflowers will do fine. There are many different sizes and colors of sunflowers available, so plant spacing depends on the height of the plants at maturity. Specific planting instructions are on the seed packets. The Burpee on-line catalog shows photos of many varieties.
Plant seeds after the danger of frost has passed (probably early May in Vineyard Haven). Once the seeds sprout, put a mulch of newspaper covered with hay or straw around them to keep weeds down. Sunflowers are very drought-tolerant, but will perform best if you keep soil evenly moist, but not soggy. If your soil is poor, add compost to it before you plant the seeds. Also, if you choose varieties that grow very tall, locate them on the north side of your garden so they won't shade other sun-loving plants when they are full grown. There's lots of other information about sunflowers in the Q&A library if you want to learn more. Enjoy!
