We bought a house last summer and in the back yard is a Black raspberry tree. Does it need pruning and when should it be done? The tree is big and the branches are so long they bend over and touch the ground.

I'm guessing that your tree is a fruiting Mulberry. The fruit is edible, and looks very much like long, black raspberries. Mulberry trees can take severe pruning and will come back with gusto. You can prune many of the branches back to a main limb (don't leave stubs!), and then shorten the limbs to the point where you want two new branches to develop. You can prune now before spring growth begins.
