Carrot seeds should be sown only one-quarter of an inch deep. Sow the seeds thinly. After the seedlings have sprouted, thin them to about one inch apart. Continue to thin as the foliage grows so that the carrots are about 1 1/2 or 2 inches apart. Carrots thrive in sandy soils, rich in humus. Prepare the planting bed by digging in lots of aged compost or peat moss before you plant and you'll be rewarded with straight, long carrots.
