What Grass Seed? - Knowledgebase Question

I have a large area 40' x 40' that was used for gardening. I want to plant grass seed on most of it, saving a small portion for gardening. What type of grass seed do you recommend? It receives direct sunlight half the day. The surrounding area is natural growth wooded forest. Or I may use the small gardening portion for wild flowers. Do you have any packages of wildflower seed I could plant - something native to my area.

Based on your description it is difficult to make a suggestion for a specific grass seed or specific wildflower seed. Most lawns do best with plenty of sunlight and without competition from tree roots; it also depends on the condition your soil is in. Wildflowers, too, have specific preferences about light and soil. You might wish to run some basic soil tests and make your selections based on the results (you mgiht find that a groundcover might do better than grass, for instance.) Another possibility would be to consult with your local County Extension (345-3283) to see which grass types they are suggesting for your local area and soils. They should also be able to help you with the soil tests and interpreting the results.

With regard to the wildflowers, you might try one of the Burpee wildflower mixes (Northeastern or North American Perennial) to experiment and see which of the various plants do best in your garden and then work from there in subsequent years. You may even find that the woods offer a surprising number of wildflowers that will be happy to colonize your garden spot!
