What is the best way to separate young tomato plants?

By young plants I assume you mean seedlings. One way is to take the rootball out of the pot and gently drop it to crack open the root ball a bit, then work by tearing the soil apart. Another method is to use a small tool such as a demitasse spoon to lift and separate the seedlings. Yet another method is to loosen the soil, then grasp them gently by the leaves and tug until they separate. With a little experimentation you will find a method that works for you. In my experience, though, the best method is to avoid the problem in the first place by sowing the seed further apart.
