I just received the Canna Lilly Bulbs/roots that I ordered from you. The roots appear to be sprouting. I have 2 questions. First, how do I position the "roots" in the soil and second, can I plant them now even though the temperature is still below freezing during the night? |
The cannas will not tolerate frost, so you can try to hold them indoors in a cool spot (not freezing) or you can pot them up and give them a head start on the season. If you plant them in pots temporarily, simply use a pot large enough to accommodate it for the time being adn keep it in the brightest light available. Many gardeners prefer to do this because they are heat lovers and should not be planted out until the soil and temperatures warm in late spring. To plant them, simply put them in rich soil with the growing tips facing upward and with the rhizome just under the soil surface. Once the outdoor temperatures rise and the soil is truly warm, mulch them well and keep them moist for best growth. |
