What can be done to prevent this continuing problem? |
First off, fusarium can be avoided by growing resistant varieties and since you have had these problems, look for varieties with resistance to both. Both of these wilts are soil born, so the best controls are to practice good sanitation. Begin with clean tools, soil and pots if you grow your own or purchase disease free transplants. In the garden, remove and destroy all diseased plant parts immediately and remove all plant debris in the fall (including roots). Finally, be sure to rotate your crops -- a five year rotation is not too much -- and be careful not to repeat tomatoes, their relatives or other wilt prone plants such as eggplants, potatoes, or peppers. |
