| I am starting seedlings for my shady back yard garden. All of the plants I selected are for shade. My questions are: Is it a good idea to use a grow light? Do I keep the light on 24 hrs or just part of the day ?I have a 33 watt flourescent light.

|Seedlings do better with ample light, so most gardeners find that lights such as fluorescent shop lights (and a timer) are helpful. You would want to run the light for about 14 to 16 hours a day (even though these are shade plants) and turn them off at night. Adjust the light to keep it within a few inches of the seedlings as they grow.
