I want to start planting some seeds I just bought from the store (onions,cucumbers,carrots,...). Is it safe to start my veggies in an egg carton? I saw it done on Nickelodeon, one day when I was watching with my children,if so,should I put a hole in the bottom of each section for drainage? Those little seed starter containers are expensive and I would be recycling with the egg cartons I already have. |
Egg cartons have been used successfully by some gardeners, but in my experience they do not hold enough soil to support the seedlings once they have germinated; they are also difficult to water. The commercially available pots are about the right size but they are expensive. One (time consuming but free) alternative is to make pots out of folded newspaper, another inexpensive way is to use the small 3 or 5 ounce size paper cups with a small hole punched in the bottom for drainage. Be sure to set the containers on some sort of tray to protect your furniture. Good lcuk with your seeds! |
