Soil Preparation - Knowledgebase Question

I live in Northern Florida and have a loomy (sand and clay)
type soil. I am wondering what to do to prepare the soil
for growing a garden. I am new at this and need all the basic skills I can aquire.

You are wise to prepare before you plant! Good preparation will result in a much more productive garden.

I suggest you start with a soil test to determine the pH and nutrient levels. Your County Extension Office (phone 904-752-5384) can assist you with having your soil tested.

When the results are in, make the recommended nutrient additions. Also, mix in about 4 inches of good compost as deeply as is practical. This will improve you soil's structure as well as its water and nutrient holding capacity.
