| I have 1 peach and 1 nectarine tree in my backyard. (Don't know the age or type of tree). The peach tree sheds its leaves in the winter and then gets them back in spring but does not flower. The nectarine tree flowers and bears some hard green fruit but they just remain green and hard and have a bitterness even when ripe. Can you tell me what I can do to get more fruit on my trees? |
| Only certain varieties of peaches and nectarines will produce fruit in your mild winter area. Both trees have a winter chilling requirement (depending on variety, a certain number of hours below 45F). If your peach tree isn't developing flowers, it can't produce fruit. Without the minimum chill requirement, the tree will not consistently develop flower buds, but there may be a year with a cold winter that will result in peaches the following summer. You might try thinning the fruit on your nectarine so the tree can put its energy into fully ripening just a few fruit, instead of producing an abundance of inedible fruit. |
