Blueberries are excellent ornamental shrubs that produce edible fruits. Blueberry shrubs need full sun and cool, moist, acid soil that drains well. Your gardening region traditionally has alkaline soil. You can lower the soil's pH by incorporating peatmoss prior to planting your blueberries. Plant 5' apart, and plant two different varieties for better pollination. Try 'Bluecrop' and 'Berkeley' in your region. Plants should be pruned after harvesting to promote new fruiting buds. Simply cut back the ends of the twigs that produced fruit and new shoots will develop the following spring. Blueberries are easy to care for; they require lots of water during the summer, and annual pruning after harvest.
