I have a Bird of Paradise that I have raised from a single leaved plant to a 3 foot giant. When will it bloom? I have heard it must be potbound, which it is- I am thinking of dividing it- I also place this plant outside with a northeastern exposure in the summer.

Strelitzia, or Bird of Paradise, can grow to the impressive height of 5', with lush, green foliage and incredible blooms held on stalks above the plant. They bloom best when overcrowded and pot bound, so don't divide your plant just yet or you'll delay blooming. Withhold fertilizer but give your plant regular water and place it outdoors where it will get some morning sun in the summer months. It should be mature enough to bloom this year.
