From what I understand, the poppy seeds we eat on bagels and in muffins come from the opium poppy (Paper Somniferum), which, depending on who you talk to, may or may not be illegal to grow...being on the safe side, is there another type of poppy that I can grow and use the seeds in cooking and recipes? |
Edible poppy seeds come from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). Growing a few of the plants for the edible seeds is probably not illegal, depending upon local ordinances. Seeds for growing Papaver somniferum are available from Territorial Seed Company, PO Box 157, Cottage Grove, OR 97424, or from Thompson & Morgan, PO Box 1308, Jackson NJ 08527. |
