After the asparagus has grown up a foot, what do we need to do?

If this is a new asparagus bed, just leave the spears and foliage alone. Asparagus plants need to put all of their energy into establishing deep roots. Everything will die down this winter and you can bend the foliage down to the soil level, using it as a mulch to help protect the crowns of the plants. When the asparagus plants are three years old you can begin harvesting the spears.
