| I am trying to find out why are tree is dying. Last summer, white fungus began to appear on our Littleleaf Linden. We were told that the winter cold would kill it, but now the bark is starting to strip off of the tree. I realize that this is a sign of dead wood. Is the fungus the cause or is that just a result of the dying branches. In the trunk of the tree I also noticed a number of bore holes about 1/8" diameter, could this be some type of insect infestation? |
| The poor tree -- sounds like it got hit with all kinds of problems. Well, cold shouldn't have been a problem in your region, since littleleaf lindens are popular, and very hardy, street trees here in Burlington, Vermont. But they are succeptible to mites, borers and other insects. The fungus is probably a secondary infection that attacked the tree after is was weakened by borers. Most likely, the tree won't make it, but get a decisive opinion from a professional arborist. If you want to try again, find out all you can about the specific pests that attack the littleleaf linden, and work on a preventive maintenance program. |
