! have tulips that are about 6 inches tall. It's been chilly at night -- would it be ok to move them now? Will I still get tulips this year? |
Moving them now would be a bit risky but it is possible to do it. Prepare the new planting spot first. Dig them up with as large a rootball as possible and replant immediately and water in well. If you take enough soil along with the bulb the plant won't know it has been moved. If you take too little, you may stress it enough that it aborts the blooms. Given the choice, it's better to wait until after they bloom and even better to allow the foliage to grow, ripen and fade then dig them up and store them for the summer then finally replant in the new location in the fall. Rebloom next year is also dependent on the type of tulip you have -- many of the popular types do not bloom well after the first year or two. |
