Sounds like Botrytis (gray mold) to me! Gray mold thrives in very humid conditions. If your flowers are plagued with this problem, you'll need to increase air circulation around the plants by thinning them. Or, you can apply a preventive spray of Soap Shield, available from Gardens Alive (812/537-8650; gardener@gardens-alive.com). Hope this helps!
