Rudbeckia is known as Black-eyed Susan, Coneflower, Gloriosa daisy and Golden-glow. The common names differ from region to region, but generally reflect a description of the flower. Since it's daisy-like when it opens, turning to a cone-like appearance at maturity, the common names fit quite well. It's difficult to track the origins of common names; they come in and out of favor and seem to migrate to and from gardening regions. Hope this puts you on the right track for further study!
