Are there any varieties of pansies that are perennials or self-seeding? |
Unfortunately, pansies tend to resent the summer heat so much as well as exhaust themselves by blooming so much that they are treated as annuals even if they could manage to survive. Most of the larger modern pansies we see will not self seed, but heirloom plant specialists occasionally offer older open pollinated varieties which will self seed where happy. In my garden, the smaller violas such as the "Princess" series have self seeded for years. You will also find that the little Johnny Jump Ups are reliable self seeders, although they tend to pop up every which way instead of in a tidy little patch. Burpee (800-888-1447) offers several heirloom and viola types in the current Heirloom Catalog. |
