Lilacs In the South - Knowledgebase Question

I grew up in CT, where we had loads of lilacs, and they've always been my favorite. I now live in northwest Florida and would love to have them, but think it may be too hot here. Is there a type I can plant here?

Unfortunately lilacs suffer in the Deep South and are poorly adapted. As an alternative shrub you might consider crape myrtle (pretty but lacks the fragrance) or Buddlea davidii (pretty and fragrant).
