Flowering Kale - Knowledgebase Question

In early April, I started several flowering kale from seed in trays. The seed packet said I could plant them outside as late as May for our area (Sunset Zone 18). Is this kosher? Or am I just going to end up with burnt kale this summer?

Ornamental kale grows best in cool weather, so your plants will appreciate growing during the fall, winter and early spring in your gardening region. When air and soil temperatures warm up, the kale will probably go to seed. Not all is lost - you can enjoy having small, colorful plants until your weather warms up. Next time sow the seeds in fall for transplant outdoors during the winter season.
