Do you need to change (that is, dump old and put in new) soil in containers after a few years? If so, how many years?

Since the soil in containers is subject to leaching, compaction and exhaustion, in my experience it is a good idea to replace at least about a third of it every year and to "fluff" it up in the process. For smaller containers, however, especially those which fill with roots by the end of the season, it is a good idea to start over each spring.
