I have noticed small holes in a row on some of the trees in our yard. They are all over the trees. If it is a pest, can I somehow save the trees? What causes the holes?

If the holes are only about 1/4 inch deep, you are most likely seeing the work of a bird known as the sapsucker. These birds peck shallow hole in the bark of some tree species and then return to feed on the sap. There is no cause for concern as this does not really hurt the trees much, and there is little you can do anyway.
