|What are the best perennial herbs with medicinal value to grow in Minnesota?|
|That's a challenging question to answer because almost every herb has been used or can be used for some type of "medicinal" value. I'm not a doctor or a certified herbalist, so I can't really recommend a particular plant for a specific medicinal use. However, most herbs are easy to grow. They thrive in well-draining soil with full sun. Water slowly and deeply just as soil begins to dry out. Many herbs are indigenous to dry, arid climates, such as the Mediterranean, so they are used to rocky soil and dry conditions. Those herbs don't like their roots sitting in wet soil! Most herbs don't need extra fertilizer and overfertilizing seems to rob plants of their scent and flavor.
Most libraries and bookstores have a wide selection of herb books. The Herb Society of America's "Encyclopedia of Herbs and Their Uses" lists hundreds of plants, as well as their properties and medicinal purposes. If you find some particular plants you are interested in, please write back if we can provide specific growing info. Good luck!
