|I have three cucumber plants that are trellised. They are about 5 feet tall and growing well with many yellow blooms. The problem is the cucumber's grow about 2 inches and then turn brown, and die. I have only gotten 2 to grow full term.|
|It may be due to poor pollination. If you don't see bees working the blossoms, you may need to take and artist's paint brush and do their work for them. Once a day, brush the centers of the male blooms and then the centers of the female blooms (these have a mini cucumber at the base of the flower). |
If there are plenty of bees working the blooms, your cucumbers may be dying from a fungal decay. These are usually weather related and tend to go away. Try to avoid unnecessary wetting of the foliage when you water. Fungicide or bactericide sprays may help but are usually not necessary. If the problem persists, you may want to contact your County Extension Office (phone 713-855-5600) for recommended spray options.
