What are the requirements for growing one of my favorite vegetables, kohlrabi? I cannot find ph, soil texture, type of feeder, when to start seeds for transplants (if done) or direct planting, watering, fertilizing. |
I like kohlrabi, too, but I don't think alot of Americans plant it. Kohlrabi grows in hot or cool weather and takes about 80 days to harvest. Like most vegetables, it does best in a rich, evenly moist soil with plenty of organic matter worked in. It needs to grow fast in order to have a mild flavor. The texture and flavor really depend on the plant always having adequate water; if the soil is too dry the bulb will be dry and woody. Sow in place from seed, as it doesn't do as well transplanted. If your soil is fertile, you probably won't have to fertilize. Otherwise, fertilize just as you would your other vegetables. Good luck! |
