The Aubrieta (Purple Rock Cress) bloomed beautifully this spring, however now it is getting leggy and parts growing close to the ground are turning brown. Should this plant be cut back after flowering? How soon after flowering? Can the cut back parts be used as cuttings for growing another plant? Does it seed itself if not cut back? |
Aubrieta, or Purple Rock Cress, is an easy plant to care for. Simply cut it back hard after flowering to keep it looking and growing its best. You can use the cuttings to start new plants and root them directly in the soil or in sharp sand. They should root readily. To prepare a stem after cutting, pull off the lower leaves but leave the upper leaves in place. Place the cutting in moistened soil or sand, deeply enough for one or two leaf scars to be covered with soil. New roots will develop at one or both of the leaf scars. |
